
Orangewomen Lacrosse Welcomes 11 Freshmen To Squad

The women’s lacrosse team started fall practice in September with many new faces. Head coach Lisa Miller welcomes 11 freshmen student-athletes for the 2002-03 school year.
Four All-Americans headline the freshmen class. Stephanie Walker (Corning, NY/Corning East High School), Melody Agnew (Winchester, MA/Winchester), Meghan O’Connell (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) and Anita Eldridge (Tully, NY/Tully) were named All-Americans following their spring season of 2002.
A two-time captain, Walker recorded 72 goals and 21 assists during her senior year and was a three-time first-time all-section player. Agnew was a four-year member of the lacrosse and soccer teams. As a captain her senior year, Agnew posted 55 goals and 22 assists and helped her team to a 20-2 record and the North Section championship. Agnew was an honorable mention All-American following her junior year. O’Connell recorded 81 goals during her senior year, scoring in 54 consecutive games. She was named 2002 New York State Player of the Year and also received first-team all-league and All-Central New York honors. Eldridge is the younger sister of current Orangewomen Alile Eldridge.
Evelyn Long, Sarah Ashworth and Christy Kim all hail from Maryland. Long is a native of Edgewater, MD and was a four-year member of the South River High School lacrosse team. Long was a first-team all-county selection in lacrosse and field hockey her senior year. She was named South River High School’s Female Athlete of the Year. Ashworth, a native of California, MD was a four-year member of the St. Mary’s Ryken lacrosse team. A goalkeeper, Ashworth recorded a .530 save percentage during her senior year. She received honorable mention all-county honors during her junior and senior years. A native of Baltimore, MD, Kim played for Oldfields High School and was a two-time all-league selection.
Paige Rasmussen, from Alexandria, VA, was the second-leading scorer for the nationally-ranked St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School during her junior year with 44 goals and 12 assists. She spent her senior year in Germany, where she was named MVP of her high school volleyball team after leading them to the European Championships. Helen Dodderidge from Bluemont, VA was a first-team all-district and all-region player for Loudoun Valley High School.
Jennifer Kasel and Jennifer Sadler round out the freshmen class. Kasel was a four-year member of the Mountain Lakes High School women’s lacrosse team. The Mountain Lakes, NJ native was a two-time all-area and all-division player. Sadler was a four-year member of the women’s lacrosse, basketball and field hockey teams at Pomfret School. A captain during her senior year, the Hingham, MA native was a New England All-Star in field hockey and lacrosse in 2002.
The Orangewomen finished the 2002 season with a 10-6 overall record and went 3-3 in the BIG EAST. SU qualified for its third straight NCAA Tournament. Syracuse travels to Virginia on Saturday, Oct. 19 to play in the George Mason Tournament.
