To raise awareness for the situation, former NBA star Manute Bol, Fairfield basketball player Ajou Deng, and Duany, all Sudanese natives, formed a team called the Lost Boys of Sudan that competed this summer the Hartford Summer Pro-Am League. While Duany wasn't eligible to play because of NCAA regulations, he and his family continue to rally support for their cause.
Duany's mother, Julia, is the coordinator of South Sudanese Friends International, Inc., an organization dedicated to raising awareness for Sudan's plight. Last spring, she came to Syracuse to speak at the "Sudan and Syracuse for Peace Program." The program was held at the Reformed Church of Syracuse and featured an eight-mile "Walk of Remembrance" for those that have died during the fighting in Sudan.
On the court in 2001-02, Duany was one of the Orangemen's most consistent performers. He started all 36 games last season and averaged 12.2 points and 5.3 rebounds an outing.
Duany, a team captain, and the Orangemen tip-off their season against the Memphis Tigers in the AT&T Wireless Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on November 14 at Madison Square Garden. Syracuse's first home game will be November 24th against Valparaiso.
