Women's Soccer Announces 2002 Signees

Emily Kowalczyk, a goalkeeper from Dayton, Ohio, earned All-Midwest, All-Ohio First Team and All-Area Player of the Year accolades in 2001 at Centerville High School. Kowalczyk stopped 90-of-109 shots on goal in 2001 for an .826 save percentage, posted 5.4 shutouts and had a 1.16 GAA.
Kowalczyk has been on numerous state and national squads. She was the captain of the ODP '84 Ohio South State Team from 1998-2001, was a member of the under-16 National Pool, and most recently, the USYSA All-American European Tour in 2001.
Brooke DeRosa, a center-midfielder from Ronkonkoma, N.Y., has also signed a letter of intent to play for SU and earned five letters playing soccer for Connetquout High School. DeRosa scored 13 goals in only nine games as a captain her senior season and was a two-time All-Suffolk County selection. She has been a part of the Olympic Developmental Program since 1997 and played on the ODP International Regional Team in 2000 and 2001.
Three high school seniors have verbally committed to play for the Orangewomen in addition to Kowalczyk and DeRosa.
Grace Hurd, a midfielder from Rockville, Conn., was a three-time All-Central Connecticut Conference selection at Rockville High School. Hurd, a team captain in her junior and senior season, scored two goals and had three assists as a senior and helped lead her team to the state tournament.
Nikki Spartano, a midfielder/forward from nearby Nottingham High School in Syracuse, was a four-time All-Onondaga High School League selection for the Bulldogs and was first-team All-Central New York and an all-state selection in her senior year. She was also a team captain as a senior and finished the season with 15 goals and three assists.
The Orangewomen also received a verbal commitment from Jenna Richter, a center-midfielder from Morristown High School in New Jersey. Richter was a two-time all-state selection and a three-time all-conference selection at Morristown. Richter scored eight goals and had 16 assists in her senior season, captaining her team to the Iron Hills Conference Championship.
Syracuse finished the 2001 season 12-7, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
