
Orangewomen Seek Season Sweep in Providence

The Syracuse University women's basketball team will try to sweep its season series with the Providence Friars on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
Syracuse (14-7, 7-3 BIG EAST) ended an 11-year drought versus Rutgers, defeating the Scarlet Knights, 68-51, at Manley Field House on Wednesday. The victory was SU's first versus Rutgers since a 54-52 decision during the 1990-91 season. Senior guard Jaime James (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) poured in 19 points, including 17 in the second half. Sophomore Shannon Perry (Providence, R.I./La Salle). scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while sophomore Julie McBride (Mechanicville, N.Y./Catholic Central) hit for 13 points and seven assists. Freshman Rochelle Coleman (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) came off the bench and scored a career-best 10 points in career-high 27 minutes of play. The victory was SU's seventh in league play, surpassing their conference win total from last season.
McBride leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.5 points per game, while dishing out 5.7 assists. James is averaging 14.8 points per contest and Perry leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game.
Providence (9-12, 3-7 BIG EAST) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 62-51 win at St. John's on Wednesday. The losing skid started with the 81-52 loss to the Orangewomen on Jan. 12. Freshman Jessica Simmonds had her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Keisha Blackwell added 11 points, while senior Dani Trippany had 10 rebounds. Trippany is the Friars' leading scorer, averaging 10.5 points per game. She also leads PC on the glass with 6.2 rebounds per game. Senior Chrissy Vozab leads the team with 45 assists, but will play limited minutes for the rest of the season because of a stress fracture in her foot. Providence has outrebounded five of its 10 conference opponents, including No. 1 Connecticut which leads the nation in rebound margin.
