The SU women’s lacrosse team plays its first BIG EAST Conference contest of 2002 against rival Georgetown today at 3:30 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Friday’s game marks the fifth meeting between No. 7 Syracuse (2-1) and No. 2 Georgetown (4-0) women’s lacrosse. The Orangewomen are 0-4 against the Hoyas. SU finished second in the conference last year behind Georgetown with a record of 5-1. Syracuse played Georgetown twice in 2000, a 16-12 defeat in the regular season and an 11-10 loss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Orangewomen hold the seventh position in the IWLCA poll for the second week in a row, the highest ranking for SU in the program’s five-year history.
Syracuse came back from a five-goal deficit against No. 5 Maryland to take a 10-9 lead but were unable to hold on as the Terps scored six of the last seven goals to take a 15-11 win on Sunday, March 10. Sophomore Danielle Lillis (West Islip, NY/West Islip) recorded her second collegiate hat trick against Maryland. Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Washington, DC/Georgetown Day) scored twice and dished out a career-high three assists. Junior midfielder Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale), Soults and sophomore Leigh-Ann Zimmer (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) are among the top ten in scoring in the BIG EAST.
The Hoyas are ranked second in the IWLCA poll for the second straight week. Georgetown has secured victories against Richmond, Princeton, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. The Hoyas were ranked fourth in the Preseason IWLCA Poll before an upset win against second-ranked Princeton, 15-13, in overtime on Sunday, March 3.
