
No. 7 Orangewomen Look For First Win Against No. 5 Maryland

Seventh-ranked Syracuse looks for its second victory against a top-ten team this season today when the Orangewomen play fifth-ranked Maryland at 1 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
Sunday’s game marks the fifth meeting between Syracuse (2-0) and Maryland (0-2) women’s lacrosse. The seventh-ranked Orangewomen are 0-4 against the fifth-ranked Terrapins. SU moved into seventh place in the latest IWLCA poll, the highest ranking for SU in the program’s five-year history.
The Orangewomen defeated No. 7 Virginia, 12-10, on Saturday, March 2 for its second win of the season. Senior tri-captain Carrie Soults (Georgetown Day School) and Kim Wayne (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) led the scoring with three goals each. Soults leads the team in scoring with seven goals, while Wayne is first in points with 10 (five goals, five assists).
In SU’s last face-off with Maryland, exactly one year ago today, Soults tied a career high with five goals, and Carla Gigon (Hingham, MA/Hingham) recorded a personal-best 17 saves.
Maryland entered the 2002 season as the seven-time defending national champion and the winningest team in the history of women’s lacrosse. The Terrapins moved down to No. 5 in the IWLCA poll after losing its first two games to Duke and North Carolina.
Terrapins' assistant coach Gary Gait graduated from Syracuse in 1991 after an illustrious career on the men’s lacrosse team. Gait was a three-time All-American and a NCAA Tournament MVP in 1990.
