
SU Volleyball Wins Season Opener, 3-0

SYRACUSE, NY - The Syracuse women’s volleyball team defeated Wagner, 3-0, on Friday night in the first day of action at the Big Orange Tournament in Manley Field House.
The Orangewomen (1-0) combind for a .394 team hitting percentage, led by freshman Aila Dommestrup (Ottawa,Ontario/Sir Robert Borden) who recorded eight kills. Sophomore Morgan Jones (Malad, ID/Malad) finished the match with a .600 hitting percentage with six kills on 10 attacks, and freshman Kristen Conway (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) started off her career with six kills.
The SU defense held Wagner (0-1) to a -.086 hitting percentage, and junior co-captain Christen Casey (Long Beach, IN/Marquette) led the team with nine digs. Junior Michaela Skelly (Simi Valley, CA/Royal) dished out 17 assists and served up five aces to lead the squad.
Loyola (1-0) defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-0, in the first match of the evening. Becky Corb recorded a double-double in the Greyhound win with 12 kills and 10 digs. Mary Hamsher led the offense with 14 kills.
Jennifer Cote and Chantelle Bowden led Central Connecticut (0-1) with eight kills each, and Jackie Fernandez recorded a team-high 10 digs.
The Big Orange Tournament at Manley Field House resumes action at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 31 when Wagner faces Central Connecticut State. Syracuse plays Loyola at noon and Central Connecticut State at 5 p.m.
