
Volleyball Takes On Manhattan, Providence and Boston College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse volleyball team gets back into action this weekend after an eight-day rest. The Orangewomen went into the break with a two-match shutout streak after defeating Seton Hall and Siena in three games. SU will face non-league foes Manhattan and Providence on Friday and Saturday, before travelling to play BIG EAST rival Boston College on Sunday.
The Orange have a 3-1 record against the Jaspers. Manhattan earned its only win of the series in the last meeting, 6-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-9, in the 2000 Syracuse Invitational Tournament. SU’s last victory was in 1998, an 18-16, 15-7, 15-12 win in Riverdale.
Providence holds the advantage in the series against Syracuse with a 24-16 all-time record against the Orange. However, SU has won the last four meetings, and has a 6-3 record against the Friars during head coach Jing Pu’s tenure. Syracuse defeated Providence, 30-10, 30-6, 30-8, in 2002. In 1999, SU defeated the Friars in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship, 10-15, 15-7, 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, to advance to the title match. The Friars left the BIG EAST before the 2003 season and are now competing as an independent in volleyball.
Syracuse holds a 24-5 overall mark against Boston College. SU defeated the Eagles last season, 30-21, 30-19, 30-23. BC needed four games to earn a win against the Orange in 2001, 24-30, 30-19, 30-24, 30-25. Syracuse holds a 5-7 record against the Eagles during Pu’s tenure.
The Orangewomen meet Manhattan on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The match against Providence is on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., and SU takes on Boston College on Sunday at 5:00 p.m.
