
Aprelle Watkins Granted Sixth Year of Eligibility

Watkins holds the Syracuse record in the triple jump with a mark of 42-4.75. She competed at the 2002 USA Track & Field Championships in the triple jump. Watkins earned indoor and outdoor All-BIG EAST honors by placing third in the triple jump at both meets in 2002. She is a two-time Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, and has been named to the SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll eight semesters.
Last season, Watkins placed sixth in the triple jump (41-1.75) and finished 10th in the long jump (18-7.25) at the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championship. She finished eighth in the long jump at the ECAC Indoor Championship (19-3.5). Watkins won the long jump (18-11.75) and the triple jump (40-6) at the Husky Invitational. She won the triple jump (40-8.75) and placed second in the long jump (18-8) at the Syracuse Invitational.
Watkins is the fifth Syracuse student-athlete to be awarded a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Former football star and current member of the NFL’s Denver Broncos Kyle Johnson (1997-99, 2001) was granted a sixth year after injuring his left ankle in the first game of his senior season. Football All-American Dan Conley (1990-92, 1994) was granted a sixth year of eligibility after injuring his knee in the second game of his sophomore year (1992). In 2000, track & field Olympian and All-American Adrian Woodley (1995-96, 1999-00) competed in his sixth year of eligibility for the Orange. Former women’s soccer player Whitney Cali also earned a sixth year of eligibility and played her final year for the Orangewomen after being part of the William & Mary soccer program for five years.
