SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Sophomore #Billy Edelin# scored 17 points, including 14 in the second half, to lead the #19/21 Orangemen (4-1) to a 69-63 win versus Manhattan (3-2) on Wednesday night.
Edelin connected on 5-of-8 attempts from the floor in the second frame and tallied eight points in a 12-3 Orange run that helped erase a 42-34 halftime deficit and gave SU a 48-45 lead with 14:29 left to play. Edelin scored the first basket of the half on a layup. After a two-pointer by sophomore #Gerry McNamara#, Edelin hit again from close range. A dunk by junior #Hakim Warrick# tied the score at 42-42. Edelin scored layups on consecutive possessions and Warrick closed the run with a pair of free-thows. The Orangemen led by as many as 10 in the second half and went on to a six-point triumph.
SU's defense held the Jaspers to 21 second-half points and only six field goals. Manhattan was 6-of-23 (26.1 pct.) in the second stanza. The Orange also forced a season-high 19 turnovers in the game.
McNamara added 16 points and was 6-of-6 from the free-thow line. He also drilled two three-pointers in the contest moving into 10th all-time at Syracuse with 99 triples. Warrick posted his first double-double of the year with 12 points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Freshman #Louie McCroskey# scored a career-high eight points off the bench.
Manhattan held a 10-2 advantage early, but a 10-0 spurt gave SU a 12-10 lead at 15:06. McNamara scored five points during the streak, including his first three-pointer of the game. With the score 28-28, the Jaspers' Luis Flores buried a three, and connected on two free-thows on Manhattan's next possession to put the Jaspers up 33-30 and Manhattan closed the half on a 12-3 run.
Flores, the 2002-03 MAAC Player of the Year, led the Jaspers with 22 points. He also extended his streak of double-digit scoring contests to 37, tying him with Ike Diogu of Arizona State for the third-longest active streak in the NCAA. Dave Holmes chipped in 12 points and added nine rebounds. Jason Benton was 6-of-6 from the floor and finished with 14 points.
The victory was ninth straight for the Orangemen against Manhattan and the 24 straight against schools hailing from New York State.
Syracuse will host the Siena Saints on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 4:00 p.m.
