SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Sophomore #Billy Edelin# tallied a personal-best 28 points as the #17/20 Orangemen (8-1) extended their winning streak to eight games by defeating Canisius (4-7), 87-70 at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday.
Edelin connected on 14-of-17 field goal attempts. He also tied his personal-best with nine rebounds and added nine assists. It was the first time an SU player has made 14 shots from the floor since Otis Hill hit 14 against Alabama on Jan. 11, 1997.
Sophomore #Gerry McNamara# finished with 21 points. He was 5-of-15 from three-point range. His 15 attempts were one shy of Marius Janulis' school record and his five three's give him 115 for his career, one short of Dave Johnson for eighth on SU's all-time list.
Trailing 28-23 with 8:31 left in the first half, the Orangemen put together a 15-0 run to take a 10-point lead, 33-23. Junior #Hakim Warrick# began the stretch with a dunk. Edelin hit three-straight field goals and McNamara scored the next five points on a pair of free-throws and a triple. Edelin closed the run with a layup. Canisius cut SU's advantage to five on a basket by Kevin Downey and a layup by Dewitt Doss got the Griffs within three, 41-38 at halftime.
Leading by two early in the second frame, the Orangemen went on an 8-0 spurt to gain a 52-42 edge at 15:54. The burst was fueled by Edelin, who had four points during the stretch. A McNamara trey extended SU's advantage to 14 and another Edlelin basket gave the Orangemen a 76-60 lead. Senior #Ronneil Herron# scored four straight points in the final minutes and freshman #Terrence Roberts# gave SU its final margin with a slam dunk.
Warrick finished with 19 points and nine rebounds and junior #Josh Pace# contributed six points and tied his career high with nine rebounds. He also added six assists.
Kevin Downey paced the Golden Griffs with 16 points and Dewitt Doss chipped in 15. Toby Foster grabbed a team-best nine boards.
Syracuse held the Griffs to 39 percent shooting (23-59). It was the fourth time this season the Orange defense has held the opposition below 40 percent from the floor.
The win was SU's third against a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent and extended the Orangemen's winning streak against teams from New York State to 27 games.
Head coach #Jim Boeheim# has never lost to a school that now competes in the MAAC.
Syracuse will host Big Ten foe Michigan State on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 12:00 p.m. The contest will be televised live on CBS.Â
