STORRS, Conn. – Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# scored 29 points for the second consecutive game, but it wasn't enough for the 17/18 Orangemen (16-4, 7-3 BIG EAST) as they lost to 23/19 Connecticut (15-5, 6-3 BIG EAST), 75-61, Monday at the Hartford Civic Center.
Anthony tied his career high, set in Saturday's 94-80 win at West Virginia, and added 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double in 20 games. Eleven of Anthony's points came from the foul line. Senior #Kueth Duany# and sophomore #Hakim Warrick# each scored 12 points in the loss.
The Huskies used an early 10-0 run to take a 16-4 lead seven minutes into the game. A pair of baskets by Anthony and another by Duany cut UConn's edge to six, 16-10, before Emeka Okafor sank three-of-four from the charity stripe to give the Huskies a 19-10 advantage. Anthony added two more buckets to pull SU within five, 19-14, midway through the first. A six-point effort by Duany down the stretch kept Syracuse within striking distance, but Connecticut took a 30-27 lead into the intermission.
The Orangemen didn't make a field goal until the second half was almost eight minutes old, but Anthony's free-throw shooting cut the Huskies' edge to two, 42-40. Anthony was 11-for-12 from the line during that stretch. Four points each by Okafor and Marcus White put UConn up by eight, 50-42, with 11:23 on the clock. Freshman #Gerry McNamara# connected on a three-point attempt for his only points of the night to pull the Orange within four, 53-49, but that was as close as SU would get. A 10-2 Connecticut run built the Huskies a 12-point lead, 63-51, with five minutes left, and the hosts took the 75-61 decision.
Four Huskies finished with double-digits in the points column. Okafor led UConn with 15, Rashad Anderson added 13, Ben Gordon scored 11, and Denham Brown finished with 10 points. Connecticut held Syracuse to 29.9 percent from the floor, the Orangemen's poorest shooting effort since the 1996-97 campaign.
The Orangemen will look to reclaim the lead in the BIG EAST's West Division on Saturday, Feb. 15, when they host current leader 10/9 Notre Dame at 1:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
