Senior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) scored three goals and had three assists to lead the defending national champion Syracuse men's lacrosse team to a 15-14 victory against Maryland in a preseason exhibition game at the Carrier Dome. The scoreboard was reset to 0-0 after each quarter and extra time was added to the clock in the fourth quarter.
Maryland, the preseason No. 5-ranked team, was led by freshman attackman Joe Walters, who poured in a game-high six goals and added one assist to finish as the contest's overall leading scorer.
The Orangemen outscored the Terps, 3-2, in the first quarter. Junior midfielder Steve Vallone (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) put SU on the scoreboard first when he drove in from the right side and released a shot from about seven yards out at the 13:59 mark. Maryland's Matt Urlock tied the game at 1-1 when he picked up a groundball and sent a bounce shot past SU goaltender Jay Pfeifer (Towson, Md./Gilman). SU's junior attackmen Brian Nee (Cockeysville, Md./Boys' Latin) and Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage) connected to put the Orangemen back up by one (2-1) at the 11:06 mark. Walters then scored the first of his six goals at the 9:26 mark off a pass from Ryan Moran. Vallone closed out the first session with his second goal of the game, an extra-man tally from 15 yards out, off an assist from Springer with 1:21 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Terps had a 2-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4 by halftime. Walters and Moran registered unassisted goals at the 5:47 and 1:53 marks. Powell tallied SU's lone goal at 4:27 of the second quarter.
The match remained tight in the second half. Urlock scored a man-up goal for Maryland just 19 seconds into the third quarter. Nee tied the score at 5-5 at the 14:03 mark, but the Terps gained a two-point lead (7-5) at the 5:51 mark, behind goals by Moran and Walters.
Powell and Springer brought the Orangemen back. Springer drew the defense to the right and found Powell wide open on the left side at the 5:34 mark. Springer scored the next two goals to put SU back on top, 8-7, with 1:25 remaining in the quarter. Maryland would take a 9-8 lead following three periods thanks to Walters and Moran scoring two goals within 13 seconds of one another in the final 37 seconds of the quarter.
Syracuse used the extra time added to the clock in the fourth quarter to outscore Maryland, 7-5. Walters scored twice for the Terrapins in the final period. Sophomore attackman Zack Wallace (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baker) netted two goals in the final stanza and SU midfielders Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas), Steve Lykudis (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) and Kyle Olson (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) each got on the scoreboard.
Pfeifer started in goal for Syracuse and finished with seven saves, while allowing five goals. Junior Nick Donatelli (Endicott, N.Y/Union-Endicott) replaced Pfeifer in the third quarter and ended up with five saves, while allowing eight goals. Freshman Scott Udell (Locust Valley, N.Y./Schreiber) made it into the contest for the second scrimmage in a row. He faced three shots and let in one goal.
In between the pipes for Maryland was starter Danny McCormick. He totalled 11 saves and allowed 10 goals in 46 minutes of action. T.C. Behm saw some time and recorded three saves on 10 shots.
