Orangewomen Lose Finale at UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Syracuse softball team lost its final game of the UNLV Tournament, 4-2, versus the Tennessee Lady Vols at Eller Media Stadium on Sunday, February 23. The Orangewomen finished their first weekend of competition, 2-3. Tennesse is now 10-5.
Freshman shortstop Alexis Switenko (Blue Anchor, N.J./Winslow Township) provided all the offense for the Orangewomen in the bottom of the first inning. Switenko drove a 2-1 pitch over the center field fence for her first career home run, a two-run shot that gave SU a 2-1 lead.
Junior Haley Larsen (Orem, Utah/Utah Valley State J.C.) was the losing pitcher. She is 0-2 after surrendering four runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings. Christy Anch (1-0) was the winner for the Volunteers in relief. She went four innings, striking out two and walking one. It was her first career victory. Stacey Jennings pitched the final two innings for the save.
Syracuse senior Tara DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) threw two and one-third scoreless innings of relief. She did not alllow an earned run in 21 and one-third innings of work during the weekend.
Tennessee jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with a run on three hits. Jennings drove in the run with a single. After Switenko's home run, the Volunteers tied the game in the third inning with a solo home run by Katherine Card.
Card provided the game-winning runs for Tennessee in the top of the fifth inning with a two RBI single to right field. The victory secured the tournament championship for the Lady Vols with a 4-1 record.
The Orangewomen travel to Carbondale, Ill. for a tournament hosted by Southern Illinois University beginning Friday, February 28. SU will face the host Salukies, Northern Illinois and Iowa State.
