Monday’s game will feature two of the league’s top scorers: SU freshman Carmelo Anthony (20.6 ppg) and Georgetown’s Mike Sweetney (22.2 ppg). The Hoyas swept Syracuse in the regular season last year, including a 75-60 decision in the MCI Center and a 75-69 win in the Carrier Dome. The last time the Orangemen were victorious was a 70-63 triumph in the Dome in 2000-01. SU has won three of the four overtime games in the series.
Syracuse junior Jeremy McNeil was the hero in the Orangemen’s win against Pittsburgh, as the post player scored SU’s final four points to take the victory. Sophomore Hakim Warrick, who is averaging 16.4 points per game, netted a game-high 20 points, and Anthony posted his 11th double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Kueth Duany, who has a scoring average of 12.2 points per contest, finished with 15 points and six boards. Freshman Gerry McNamara, who is averaging 14.4 points per outing, scored nine on Saturday and added four assists.
Georgetown has lost three straight close games, two of them on the road. Notre Dame won in double overtime, 93-92, on Saturday in South Bend. The Hoyas lost to Seton Hall at home in overtime, 93-82, and were edged by the Panthers at Pittsburgh, 65-64, on a last-second free-throw.
Fans can listen to the game in the Syracuse area on the SU Radio Network, 1260 AM. Voice of the Orange Mark Johnson will handle the play-by-play duties, while Matt Park will provide color commentary. The game will also be televised on ESPN, with Sean McDonough and Bill Raftery calling the plays.
