Orange Sweep At Syracuse Invitational

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The men's and women's track & field teams combined for 15 first-place finishes Sunday afternoon at the Syracuse Invitational in Manley Field House.
The Orangemen scored dual meet victories against Binghamton (113-58) and Albany (97-84). The Orangewomen also defeated Binghamton (122-37) and Albany (94-83). Teams from Buffalo State, Oswego State, Toronto, Oneonta, Mohawk Valley CC, Erie CC and the Ottawa Lions Track Club competed in the meet.
Senior Richard Polidore led the men with victories in the long jump (23-9) and the 55-meter dash (6.49), as well as a second-place finish in the 300 (35.25). Also posting wins for the Orangemen were seniors Joel Carusone in the pole vault (15-3), Tim Adrian in the shot put (55-3.50), and junior John Bitok in the mile (4:14.25). The Orangemen also posted victories in the 1,600-meter relay (3:19.61) and DMR (10:19.89).
The Orangewomen claimed the top three spots in the 55-meter dash, with graduate student Alison Culley winning in 7.04. Culley was followed by freshmen Heather Stevens in 7.23 and Christen Tucker in 7.30. Culley also won the 200 dash in 24.88.
Senior Aleccia Boland won the 1,000 meters in 2:59.72 to lead the women's distance contingent. Sophomore thrower Johvonne Hernandez won the women's weight throw (59-4) and shot put (46-7.5), and classmate Jenna Grimaldi cleared 5-7 to win the high jump. Graduate student Aprelle Watkins won the triple jump with a season-best mark of 40-8.75.
The women's 1,600-meter relay team of Stevens, junior LaNae Walker, sophomore Valerie Boling and Culley sped to a 3:55.99 win.
The SU track & field squads compete at one of the nation's premiere collegiate meets, the Armory Invitational in New York City, on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
