WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman #Carmelo Anthony# scored a career-high 30 points and pulled down a personal-best 15 rebounds to lead #15 Syracuse (21-4, 11-3 BIG EAST) past Georgetown (13-11, 5-9 BIG EAST) 93-84 in overtime at the MCI Center Saturday.
Freshman #Gerry McNamara# scored 22 points, including 10 in overtime, and sophomore #Hakim Warrick# grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and added 14 points. Freshman #Billy Edelin# chipped in 14 points and seven caroms off the bench.
Syracuse rallied from a second-half deficit to win for the 11th time this season. The Orangemen trailed by 12 at one point in the second stanza, 45-33, and were behind by four, 72-68, with 2:26 remaining in regulation.
With 53 seconds left in the second half and the Orangemen trailing by three, 74-71, Edelin sank a pair of free-throws to pull SU within one. On the ensuing Georgetown possession, McNamara tipped the Hoyas' inbounds pass into Edelin's hands and he layed it in and drew a foul. Edelin converted the three-point play to give Syracuse a 76-74 lead. McNamara connected on one of two free throws with 11 seconds left to extend the advantage to three, but Gerald Riley's three-pointer from the top of the key with three seconds remaining sent the game into overtime.
Syracuse began the extra frame with an 11-3 run, including two three's by McNamara, to build an 88-80 lead with 2:41 left. After four straight free throws by Mike Sweetney cut the margin to four, 88-84 at the 1:58 mark, a dunk by sophomore #Craig Forth# and two McNamara free throws secured the win.
The Orangemen outrebounded the Hoyas 60-43, including a 24-13 edge on the offensive glass, which led to 32 second-chance points for Syracuse. It was SU's best-ever board total in the BIG EAST Conference history of the series, and the club's highest rebound number since grabbing 65 against Lafayette in a December 1993 outing. Syracuse set season highs for rebounds (60) and offensive boards (24).
Mike Sweetney led Georgetown with a game-high 31 points and 19 rebounds to go along with seven blocks and seven assists. Tony Bethel scored 19 points for the Hoyas and Courtland Freeman added 11.
Georgetown built an early 11-0 lead as Syracuse missed its first eight shots of the game. The Orangemen responded with a 12-5 run, capped by a Warrick dunk, that cut the Hoyas' lead to 16-12 with 10:30 remaining in first half. The Hoyas regained an 11-point advantage, 28-17 on a three-pointer by Tony Bethel at the 5:02 mark, but Warrick and Edelin combined for eight points during a 10-2 Syracuse run that cut the Georgetown lead to three, 30-27, at halftime.
McNamara's streak of 30 consecutive free-throws made was snapped when he missed the first of two shots at the 16:31 mark of the second half. He entered the game a perfect 41-41 in conference play. Senior #Kueth Duany# scored four points, moving him within two points of becoming the 45th Orangemen to record 1,000 points for his career.
Syracuse will travel to take on BIG EAST West Division rival #9/10 Notre Dame on Tuesday, March 4 in a 7 p.m. game.
