The award recognized the work of the Student-Athlete Council’s ‘CUSE Cares Community Outreach Program. Student-Athlete Council President Allison Culley, a graduate student on the track and field team, accepted the award on the program’s behalf.
SU student-athletes were involved in a number of community service projects throughout the 2002-03 academic year. They started the year by participating in Dollar Day at the Dome, and event which works in conjunction with the United Way. More than 250 student-athletes combined to raise $5,525.00 for the United Way during the SU football game against Pittsburgh.
In addition to the activities the Student-Athlete Council sponsored, several teams held their own community service events. The men’s basketball team participated in the Hoops for Hope dinner that benefited the Boys and Girls Clubs of Syracuse. During the SU football game against Rhode Island, the women’s softball and lacrosse teams distributed AFCA Child Identification Kits to parents. Also, the Orangemen football team held a carwash to benefit the Pop Warner football programs of Central New York last summer.
Syracuse student-athletes were also involved with community schools. The took part in several reading initiatives, including a special appearance to Stonehenge Elementary School in Camillus during Thanksgiving week and participated in a visit from fifth-graders from LeMoyne Elementary School. The women’s soccer and softball teams collected books for the United Way’s Success by 6 program before the SU men’s basketball team’s game against Notre Dame. The Student-Athlete Council also coordinated the Shooting for A’s program, which provides an opportunity for local girls to be mentored by female student-athletes in both academics and athletics.
Other local charities the Orangemen and Orangewomen are involved with include the Ronald McDonald House, which several student-athletes visited and cleaned. Through Habitat for Humanity, student-athletes will rebuild run-down houses in and around the Syracuse area to make them available for low-income residents. The Student-Athlete Council also sponsored a trip to the Nottingham Retirement Center where the student-athletes ate dinner and visited with the residents.
