SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse University student-athlete Julie Dunn of the softball team and Eric Chapman of the men's soccer team are recipients of the 2003 Soladay Award. The Soladay Award is the highest honor given to a student-athlete by the Syracuse Department of Athletics. The award, named for former Associate Director of Athletics, Doris Soladay (1931-2001), recognizes outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
Dunn is the first-ever softball student-athlete to win the Soladay Award. She is a four-year member of the Orangewomen and was a part of SU's inaugural team in 2000. Dunn will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in magazine journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication.
Dunn was a unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST selection as the Orangewomen's designated player in 2002. She was also a second-team All-Northeast Region pick after recording career highs in batting average (.299), hits (35), home runs (5) and runs batted in (22). She was the first Orangewoman ever to hit two home runs in one game and also hit Syracuse's first-ever grand slam. For her career, Dunn is the Orangewomen's all-time leader in walks and ranks among the top five in several other categories, including games played, games started, on-base percentage, hits, home runs and runs batted in.
Dunn was a third-team Verizon Academic All-American and a first-team Verizon Academic All-District I pick in 2002. She is a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star and has been named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of her seven semesters.
Chapman is the second men's soccer student-athlete to win the Soladay Award (Gabriel Gervais, 2000). Chapman is a four-time letterwinner, starting 57 of his 61 games played. Chapman will graduate in May with a dual degree in political science and Spanish language, literature and culture.
Chapman was one of SU's top defensive players during his career. He helped the Orangemen to 14 shutouts in his four years and a top-25 ranking in each of the last three seasons. He recorded his first career point in 2002 with an assist versus Loyola before suffering a season-ending head injury after seven games.
Chapman is a two-time third-team Verizon Academic All-American, the second Orangemen soccer player to earn Academic All-America distinction. He is a seven-time member of the Syracuse Athletic Director's Honor Roll and a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star.
