
Klotz Named 2003 Orange Plus Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Established in 1982 by Orange Plus, the support organization for women’s athletics at SU, the award honors a female student-athlete who has excelled in academics and athletics during her career.
Klotz, a captain and biology major, is a two-year member of the women’s soccer team. In addition to being elected captain by her peers in her senior season, Klotz started 16-of-17 games and recorded one assist as a defensive midfielder. She attended the University of Marlyand for her first two years of college, where she was a member of the Terrapins' women's soccer team, before transferring to SU in 2000.
Academically, Klotz is superb. She has maintained a 3.998 GPA on a 4.0 f college, earned her bachelor's degree in biology last December and was a 2002 University Remembrance Scholar, one of the highest honors bestowed upon a SU student. Klotz has worked as a research assistant at Maryland and SU and has done original research to help determine the weakest link in photosynthesis of plants during heat stress.
As a student-athlete, Klotz was named 2002 Verizon Academic District I First Team All-American, is a four-time member of SU Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, a 2001-02 BIG EAST Academic All-Star and a two-time member of the ACC Honor Roll.
In addition to her athletic and academic achievements, Klotz has also done her part for the betterment of society through various volunteer efforts. She has participated in park beautification projects, book drives, soup kitchens and conducted ministry at a prison through the Athletes in Action program.
Klotz has been accepted and plans to attend medical school at Johns Hopkins University in the fall.
