5/15/2003 3:01:58 PM | Men's Basketball
McNamara helped lead the Orangemen to their first national title this season, averaging a team-third 13.3 points per game and leading SU with 4.4 assists per outing. He was named to the All-Final Four Team after connecting on six three-point attempts in the championship game, tying the SU NCAA Tournament record. McNamara also set school tournament records for three-point baskets (18), three-point shots attempted (44) and steals (15). Additionally, McNamara captured the BIG EAST Conference free-throw percentage title (for league games only), and set a season standard in the process, making 53-of-55 free throws for a .964 percentage.
McNamara is one of 46 college players and one of 26 freshmen who will participate. The Trials will be held May 30-June 1 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Because he is over the 19-years age limit, McNamara is only eligible for consideration for the USA Pan American Games Team, not the Junior World Championship Team.
If he is selected, McNamara will compete for the US at the Pan Am Games, held Aug. 1-17, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The men's basketball competition is scheduled for Aug. 2-6. The USA team will be coached by Michigan State mentor Tom Izzo.
