Virginia and Maryland Student-Athletes Quotes
In the first NCAA Division I women's lacrosse semifinal at the Carrier Dome on May 16, sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Pillion scored the game-tying and game-winning goals (both off of free-position shots) at 33:17 and 35:15 of the second half to propel Princeton (15-4) to a 5-3 victory against Loyola. The win put the Tigers back in the NCAA championship game for the second consecutive season. Princeton is the defending national champion and will face Virginia in the national championship game on May 18, at 1 p.m. in the Dome.
In the second semifinal, Virginia (17-4) trailed Maryland, 8-6, with less than five minutes remaining before rallying with three unanswered goals to claim a 9-8 triumph against the Terrapins.
Junior attack Caitlin Banks started the rally with back-to-back goals at 25:46 and 27:47 of the second half. Her two net finders knotted the contest. Sophomore attack Cary Chasney scored the game-winner at 28:27 and the Cavaliers held on the rest of the way.
Virginia avenged two earlier losses at the hands of the Terrapins. Maryland won at Virginia on March 11, 11-8, and defeated the Cavaliers in the ACC championship game on April 20, 11-6. Virginia owns NCAA championships from 1991 and 1993, and has been the runner-up on three occasions (1996, 1998, 1999).
