Junior attackman Michael Powell (Carthage, N.Y./Carthage), senior attackman Michael Springer (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), senior defenseman Solomon Bliss (Tully, N.Y./Tully) and junior midfielder Sean Lindsay (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Lakeland-Panas) were each named to the 2003 STX/USILA Division I All-American Team.
Powell was SU's lone representative on the first team. It was the third consecutive season he was recognized as a first-team All-American at attack. This year, Powell led the team in scoring with 64 points, including 31 goals and a team-leading 33 assists. He finished fourth on the squad in groundballs with 45. He totalled 13 points in the NCAA Tournament, including seven points (four goals, three assists) in the quarterfinal round against Princeton.
Springer, a four-time All-American during his career, earned second-team laurels for the first time. As a freshman and junior, he received honorable mention nods, while his sophomore season he earned third-team status. He was the Orangemen's leading goal scorer in 2003 with 36 goals. He was second on the team in overall scoring with 60 points (36 goals, 24 assists). Springer leaves SU ranked third on the school's all-time goals list (159) behind Gary Gait (192) and Tom Marechek (182). He compiled 229 career points (159 goals, 70 assists) to finish his tenure ranked ninth on the all-time scoring list.
Bliss and Lindsay were honorable mention selections. For Bliss, it marked the second consecutive season winning the accolade. It was the first All-America honor for Lindsay. Bliss, a two-time team captain, was the anchor of Syracuse's close defense unit. Lindsay finished third on the team in scoring with a career-high 36 points, including a personal-best 29 goals.
Springer and Bliss were also selected to play in the 2003 STX/USILA North-South Classic. The annual all-star game will be played on Saturday, June 7 at Sacred Heart University in New Haven, Conn. The Division I game will begin at 3 p.m. and follow the Division III North-South game, which faces off at noon.
