
Syracuse Hosts Virginia Tech in First Northeast Divison Contest

The Orangewomen (4-2-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) are coming off a 2-0 loss to Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 19. Senior Nina Scalzo and junior Stephanie Sybert led Syracuse’s offense in the contest with three shots each. Scalzo entered the week ranked in the top 15 in several national and conference statistical categories: Her one goal-per-game is tied for the 15th-best mark nationally. She’s tied for 14th in the nation in points-per-game average (2.6). She also ranks seventh in the league in points (13), sixth in goals (5), her points-per-game avearge is tied for fourth, and she ranks fifth in the league in goal-per-game average.
Sophomore Emily Kowalczyk made six saves in the match to boost her career total to 74, third all-time at SU.
Virginia Tech (4-2) had its Sept. 19 contest will La Salle postponed to due to inclement weather on the east coast. The Hokies are led by Jessica Myers, who has notched five goals this season, and freshman goalkeeper Mallory Soldner. Soldner earned conference goalkeeper of the week honors for the week of Sept. 15. She is averaging seven saves per contest, second in the BIG EAST.
It will be the third meeting between the two schools. The all-time series is tied 1-1. The Orangewomen defeated Virginia Tech by the score of 1-0 in overtime in 2001. Virginia Tech was victorious in last season’s match, beating Syracuse 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 20, 2002.
