
Men's Lacrosse and Loyola Play to an 11-11 Draw

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The defending national champion Orange men's lacrosse team tied Loyola College, 11-11, in a fall scrimmage at Syracuse's Coyne Field. SU came from behind to tie the score twice, but Loyola never let go of its lead.
Junior midfielder Greg Rommel (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) led the Orange scorers with three goals and an assist. Junior attackman Brett Bucktooth (Onondaga Nation, N.Y./Lafayette) recorded two assists, while Kieran Murphy, Jarett Park, Brian Crockett, Steven Brooks, Brendan Loftus, Mike Leveille, Greg Niewieroski and Jamie Ireland all tallied goals.
Senior Jay Pfeifer played the first three quarters in goal and totaled 12 saves, including 10 in the first half. Freshman goalie Jake Myers (Badalona, Calif./Torrey Pines) was inserted at the start of the fourth quarter and stopped four shots, while allowing two goals.
The Greyhounds led 4-1 after the first 15 minutes. Sophomore Patrick Kennedy had two goals and an assist in the first quarter. SU outscored Loyola, 3-1, in the second quarter behind goals by Crockett, Rommel and Loftus. The Greyhounds led 5-4 at halftime.
Leveille tied the score at 5-5 just 42 seconds into the third quarter, but Loyola rattled off the next four goals (by four different players) to take a 9-5 lead.
Park and Rommel each tallied goals at the end of the third quarter to pull Syracuse to within 9-7. In the fourth quarter, SU outscored Loyola, 4-2. Rommel netted the Orange's 11th and tying goal with less than three minutes remaining.
The Orange will be at Coyne Field again on Sunday, Oct. 10, for the Great Pumpkin Stick-Out. SU takes on Division II national champion Le Moyne College at 11 a.m. in its first game. At 12:30 p.m. the Orange meets Herkimer and at 2:00 p.m. a regulation game will be played between SU and Dartmouth.
