Freshman middle blocker Jen Malcom (Schaller, Iowa/Schaller-Crestland HS) was named the volleyball BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week on Nov. 15. It is the second weekly conference award for Malcom, who also earned the honor on Oct. 25. Malcom helped the Orange tie for second place in the league at 8-2 after guiding the Orange to a 1-1 mark last week.
Malcom recorded 10 kills and hit .600 in SU’s 3-0 sweep of West Virginia, while tallying a season-high 14 kills and eight blocks in a 3-2 loss to Pittsburgh. Malcom averaged 3.00 kills, 1.62 blocks and hit .383 for the week.
This is the third BIG EAST weekly honor by an Orange student-athlete this season. Freshman Cheryl Cobbina was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Nov. 8.
The Orange finished the regular season 25-6 overall, 8-2 in the BIG EAST Conference. The Orange next plays in the 2004 BIG EAST Volleyball Championship, which is hosted by Pittsburgh on Nov. 20 and 21. Syracuse will be the No. 3 seed in the championship and will play No. 2 Pittsburgh at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20. The title game will be contested at Fitzgerald Field House at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21. The winner receives an automatic bid to the 2004 NCAA Championship. This is the first time since 1999 the Orange have qualified for the BIG EAST Championship. In 2000, the format was change from a six-team championship to a four-team field.
