SU Volleyball Hosts Boston College and Connecticut

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Orange volleyball team (22-5, 5-1 BIG EAST) returns home this weekend after finishing its final regular-season road trip last weekend. First this weekend, Syracuse battles with Boston College (17-10, 3-3 BIG EAST) on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Women’s Building. SU then hopes to knock off Connecticut (15-7, 5-1 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
Last week, SU had a successful weekend sweeping all three of its matches. The Orange won its final non-conference regular-season match against Rider on Oct. 29, and then proceeded to sweep Villanova on Oct. 30 and Georgetown on Oct. 31.
Junior Kelly Duan paced SU last week with 42 kills and a 5.25 kills per game average, while junior Aila Dommestrup set up most of Duan’s kills with 113 assists. Freshman Jen Malcom defended the net with 13 total blocks, including 11 block assists, and freshman Joscie Kaup recorded 46 digs.
ORANGE OPPONENTS
Boston College heads into Friday’s match with a 17-10 overall record, including a 3-3 mark in the BIG EAST. The Eagles hit a rough spot lately with three-straight BIG EAST losses to Seton Hall (3-1), Pittsburgh (3-1) and West Virginia (3-2).
Katie Andersen leads the Eagles with 343 kills for a 3.24 kills per game average. Verena Rost serves as the primary setter with 1,054 of the team’s 1,519 assists, and ranks second in the conference in BIG EAST matches for assists per game, averaging 12.68. Allison Andersen has 573 digs this season, including 216 in league matches to be the conference’s top defender with a 7.71 digs per game average in conference matches.
Connecticut enters the weekend with a 16-7 record, including a 5-1 league mark. Connecticut split its two contests last week, defeating West Virginia in five games before falling to Pittsburgh, 3-0. UConn’s top performer was junior setter Jenny Neelands who posted 76 assists and 21 digs over the two matches. Entering the UP match at 5-0 in the conference, the Huskies were off to their best start in BIG EAST play since 1998 when they opened their league slate 6-0.
Jamie Hadenfeldt paces the Huskies with 341 kills, while recording 4.01 kills per game. Hadenfeldt also had a team-leading 299 digs, while Brittany Stewart has 298 digs.
