Cobbina Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Freshman outside hitter Cheryl Cobbina (Scarborough, Ontario/Francis Libermann CHS) was named the volleyball BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week on Nov. 8. It was the first weekly conference award for Cobbina, who helped the Orange win its sixth and seventh-straight BIG EAST match during the weekend, and clinch a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Championship.
Cobbina was a key contributor to Syracuse improving to 7-1 in the conference after posting a 2-0 mark last week, beating Boston College (3-1) and Connecticut (3-0). She recorded a .393 hitting percentage with 28 kills. Cobbina had 15 kills versus Boston College to set a new personal-best.
This is the second BIG EAST weekly honor by an Orange student-athlete this season. Freshman Jen Malcom was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Oct. 25.
The Orange is 24-5 overall this season, 7-1 in the BIG EAST Conference. The team plays its final matches of the regular season this weekend, beginning with West Virginia on Friday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. SU then plays Pittsburgh on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2:00 p.m.
