ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Syracuse track and field teams open the 2004-05 indoor track season at the Cornell Relays on Saturday, Dec. 4. The Orange will once again host the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in February and will prepare for the championship meets with trips to the USTCA Series Meet at Penn State, the Illinois Invitational at the University of Illinois and the Bison Winter Classic at Bucknell University.
Field Events
Roberts will rely heavily on senior Johvonne Hernandez and junior Kristen Michalski in the women’s throwing events.
Hernandez was named a 2004 All-American in the hammer throw, and took home Outstanding Field Performer honors at the 2004 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship after winning the shot put and hammer throw events. Hernandez also earned All-BIG EAST indoor honors for the weight throw and all-conference outdoor accolades for hammer throw, shot put and discus events.
Michalski earned All-BIG EAST indoor honors after finishing third in the weight throw event at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship. Michalski had many solid performances during the outdoor season as well. Michalski finished fourth at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
Sophomore Brienne Karow was also a strong thrower for the Orange last season. Karow finished 15th at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in the discus event. Sophomore Kristen Lunetta finished 10th at the 2004 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships as a freshman. Sophomore Kyra James took home 15th place in the hammer throw at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships last season.
The men’s throwing contingent, which was led by graduate Steve Bedard in 2004, will look to sophomores Matt Glowacki and Daniel Pribula to lead the squad. Pribula finished seventh in the shot put event at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, while Glowacki finished ninth in the same event.
In the jumps, with triple jump school-record holder and All-BIG EAST performer Aprelle Watkins gone Roberts will look to senior Jenna Grimaldi who has performed well for the Orange over the last few seasons.
Grimaldi earned All-BIG EAST outdoor honors after finishing first in the high jump at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship. Grimaldi finished third in the high jump at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship, and earned All-BIG EAST indoor honors.
In addition to Grimaldi, senior Tatiana Warren will be returning to the team. Warren was a very consistent performer in the long jump last season. Sophomore Sheron Mark also performed well for the Orange in 2004. During her freshman year, Mark finished fifth at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump. In the outdoor season Mark finished seventh at the BIG EAST Championship in the high jump and eighth in the triple jump. One of Mark’s strongest performances came at the ECAC Championship where she finished third in the triple jump.
Senior Joshua Johnson and junior Brien Flewelling will lead the men’s jump team. Flewelling placed in the top ten several times last season, and joins Johnson as the most experienced men’s jumpers.
Distance
The men will lose team captain John Bitok who decided to forgo his final year of eligibility. Bitok received an NCAA post-graduate scholarship, and will be studying at Harvard University. In Bitok’s absence, Roberts will expect strong performances from senior Tim Scarpinato as well as juniors John Graham and Chris Muldoon. Last season Muldoon was an All-BIG EAST selection after finishing second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore David Wishart performed well for the Orange last season as well. Wishart represented Canada at the 2004 World Junior Cross Country Meet in Belgium.
Seniors Leah Folmsbee and Christine Ramsey will lead the women’s distance team. Last season Folmsbee finished first in the 3,000-meter run at the Big Red Invitational, and was a member of the 3,200-relay team that finished third at the Cornell Four-Way. Ramsey joined Folmsbee on the distance medley relay team that finished third at the Syracuse Invitational. Ramsey also finished first in the 5,000-meter run at the Bison Classic, and earned 10th place at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship in the 10,000-meter run. Sophomores Candace Ince and Shelby Perkins were solid performers last season for the Orange as well.
In the men’s middle distance events, senior Valerij Petrulevich returns after establishing himself a tough competitor for the Orange. Petrulevich was named to the All-BIG EAST team last season after finished third in the 800-meter run at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship.
Sprints
Roberts will look to senior Valerie Boling, who was a member of the 400-meter relay team that set the school record in the event in 2002, to lead the women sprinters. Boling had many strong performances for the Orange last season. She finished first in the 100-meter dash at the Chancellor’s Cup, first in the 60-meter dash at the Cornell Four-Way, and first in the 200-meter dash at the Cornell Four-Way. Junior Christen Tucker will also be an important sprinter. Last season Tucker performed well for the Orange; she had several top 10 finishes, including taking fourth place in the 100-meter dash at the Penn Invitational.
Sophomores Aulton Kohn and Martin Semenowicz will be asked to step up this season. Kohn and Semenowicz both performed well during their freshmen outings. Kohn took first place in the 60-meter dash at the Cornell Relays and the Cornell Four-Way. He also took first place in the 100-meter dash at the Chancellor’s Cup, and fourth in the 200-meter dash at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.
