Navy sophomore attackman Ian Dingman (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage Central H.S.) scored six goals, but it was not enough as the Syracuse Orangemen defeated the Mids, 12-8, in a scrimmage at the Carrier Dome in front of 2,628 fans.
The two teams played five 15-minute quarters and the score was reset on the scoreboard to 0-0 after each period. If it had been a regulation contest, SU would have come away with a 10-8 victory, based on the first four quarters.
Senior attackman Brian Nee had a goal and three assists for Syracuse, while sophomore attackman Brian Crockett led all SU scorers with three goals and an assist.
The Orangemen played without All-American attackman Michael Powell, who missed the scrimmage in order to attend his sister's wedding.
Junior Zack Wallace started at attack, along with Nee and Crockett. Senior Alex Zink also saw considerable time on attack. Wallace scored one goal, while Zink chipped in with a goal and an assist.
Senior Sean Lindsay was SU's top scorer from the first midfield line with two goals and an assist. He played alongside Kevin Dougherty and Steve Vallone. The second midfield line (Steve Lykudis, Brett Bucktooth and Greg Rommel) played a lot of minutes, as did junior midfielders Jarett Park and Jake Plunket.
Defensively, freshman Steve Panarelli started along with John Wright, Scott Ditzell and Dan DiPietro.
Junior Jay Pfeifer played the first 15 minutes for the Orangemen and totaled two saves, while allowing four goals.
Senior Nick Donatelli played 35 minutes, the most of any goaltender. He finished with four saves, including two exciting, point-blank saves in the third quarter. Zack Fields and Andy Shin also got into the game for SU.
Dingman scored four of his game-high six goals in the fourth quarter. Navy took a 4-3 lead at the 10:37 mark of the second quarter behind a Dingman goal that was set up by Graham Gill.
All but three SU players made it into the team's first scrimmage of 2004.
The Orangemen will participate in another scrimmage next week at the University of Maryland. SU faces the Terps at noon on Feb. 21, in College Park. The season and home opener is Feb. 28, against Army at 2:30 p.m.
