SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senior Leigh-Ann Zimmer has a chance to become SU’s leader in career goals when the Orangewomen host No. 3 Maryland in the 2004 home-opener on March 3 at 7:00 p.m.
After notching a personal-best six tallies in SU’s 14-13 win at Virginia, Zimmer has 125 goals, two fewer than school-record holder Katrina Hable.
Zimmer earned the BIG EAST's first Offensive Player of the Week Award for her performance. It was the third time in her career that she was named the league's top performer in a given week.
SU will be facing off against its second top-five opponent of the young season. The Terrapins enter the contest with a 1-1 record. They defeated Richmond in their season-opener, 16-6, but lost to No. 4 Duke, 9-7, on Feb. 29.
Jessica Dorney leads Maryland with eight points, including six goals. Kelly Coppedge is second on the club with five tallies. Annie Collins is the team’s leader in assists with three.
Kirah Miles has played all 120 minutes between the pipes for Maryland and owns a 7.50 goals against average. She has 17 saves in the two matches.
The Orangewomen and the Terrapins have met in each of the last six seasons with Maryland holding a 6-0 lead in the all-time series. SU’s first-ever women’s lacrosse game was contested against the Terrapins on March 14, 1998 with Maryland prevailing, 21-7.
Syracuse took the Terrapins to overtime last year before losing 8-7. Monica Joines forced the extra period and the Orangewomen held a 7-6 lead halfway through overtime before bowing to the Terps on a goal by Kelly Coppedge with 57 seconds left in the extra frame.
Maryland owns the record for the most goals scored versus SU (24), which came in the 2000 pairing. The largest margin of defeat in SU’s history (14) came against the Terrapins in the program’s inaugural contest.
The Carrier Dome box office will open at 8:30 a.m. and remain open until halftime of the contest. Fans can listen to the game live on WJPZ (89.1). The match will also be broadcast by Time Warner Cable on a tape delay basis. Fans should check their local listings for broadcast times and dates.
