The Orangemen maintained their No. 3 national ranking this week following a 14-12 comeback victory against No. 5 Princeton last Saturday in New Jersey. SU has a 4-1 record so far this season and will look to improve to 3-0 at home this year with a win against regional rival Hobart on Tuesday, March 30, at 7 p.m.
Hobart is coming off an 18-7 victory against Lafayette. The Statesmen are 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in the Patriot League. Hobart lost its first game of the year to Butler (7-6). It then posted league wins over Holy Cross (14-6) and Lehigh (11-4) before falling to Navy (13-8) and Georgetown (9-7). Mark Williamson is the leading scorer for the Statesmen so far with 26 points on 18 goals. Goalie Dan Valente has started in all six games and owns a 7.37 goals against average.
This game marks the 90th meeting between Syracuse and Hobart since 1916. The Orangemen control the all-time series, 63-24-2, and have won the last 17 meetings, including last year's 15-12 decision in Geneva. The last time the Statesmen defeated the 'Cuse was on April 19, 1986 in Geneva. Hobart won that game by a score of 16-13. The Statesmen have never won at the Carrier Dome. Their last win at Syracuse was in 1979.
Kraus-Simmons Trophy is on the Line
The Syracuse-Hobart rivalry is one of the oldest and fiercest in all of college lacrosse, certainly within the upstate New York region.
The winner of the Syracuse-Hobart game claims the Kraus-Simmons Trophy, named in honor of legendary SU coach Roy Simmons Sr. and former Hobart coach Babe Kraus.
The Orangemen have won the trophy the last 17 times in the 18-year existence of the tradition. The Statesmen won the first Kraus-Simmons Trophy in 1986 with a 16-13 decision in Geneva.
