The Syracuse Orangemen (6-1) maintained their No. 3 national ranking for the sixth consecutive week following a 13-6 victory against Brown on April 3, in Providence. Their most recent outing against the Bears demonstrated a marked improvement on the defensive end where SU limited Brown to six goals (the lowest opponent total of the season). Goaltender Jay Pfeifer had nine saves and the face-off unit continued to show improvement, led by Geoff Keough's 11-of-16 performance and Jarett Park's game-high seven groundballs.
The Greyhounds, ranked No. 20 in this week's Geico/STX Coaches Poll, come into this game with a 3-3 record. It has been a topsy-turvy season for Loyola. On March 20, the 'Hounds defeated then No. 10-ranked Notre Dame, 13-7, in Baltimore. The following week they lost a 14-3 decision to Brown on the road, but then came back to edge Quinnipiac with an 11-10 win. They started off the season with a 14-9 victory against Towson, then dropped back-to-back games against Hofstra (9-8) and Duke (11-3).
This will be the 19th meeting between Syracuse and Loyola. The Orangemen control the all-time series, 14-4. They won last year's meeting, 17-6, in Baltimore. The last time the Greyhounds defeated Syracuse was April 7, 2001. Dave Cottle was still coaching Loyola (now at Maryland) and Michael Powell was a freshman. The final score was Loyola 14, Syracuse 13 in overtime.
