SYRACUSE, N.Y. – SU softball coach Mary Jo Firnbach has announced the hiring of Jodie Cox as an assistant coach with the Orange. Cox will work directly with the SU pitching staff as well as assist in all aspects of the program, including recruiting, game day preparation and scouting.
Cox just finished her first season as a student assistant at Cal State Fullerton where she was responsible for the set up and organization of individual workouts and other game day and practice duties. She finished a standout playing career for the Titans in 2003. Cox was a four-time All-Big West Conference selection from 2000-03. In 2003, she was named to the all-conference first team as both a pitcher and an outfielder. She was selected a third-team All-American and Big West Co-Pitcher of the Year as a senior after leading the team with 21 victories, a 1.06 earned run average and 224 strikeouts.
Cox completed her career ranked among Cal State Fullerton’s all-time top 10 in several offensive and pitching categories. She collected 209 career hits, including eight triples and 21 home runs. Cox scored 126 runs in her four seasons and drove in another 110. As a pitcher, she amassed a 75-22 (.773) career record, ranking third on the Titans’ all-time wins list and eighth on the winning percentage chart. The left-hander threw seven career no-hitters, including a perfect game against Minnesota in 2001. She amassed 699 strikeouts in 634 and two-thirds innings pitched and limited opponents to a .170 batting average. Cox completed 72 of her starts, tossing 34 career shutouts.
“We are very excited about having a person with such a phenomenal softball background on our staff,” Firnbach said. “Jodie will bring a wealth of knowledge in all areas of the game, especially pitching. She has succeeded at the highest levels of our game, and I have no doubt she will be able to translate that experience to our players.”
In her four years at Cal State Fullerton, Cox helped the Titans to four straight Big West championships and four consecutive NCAA regional appearances. She was named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team as both a junior and a senior. Cox was a member of the USA Elite National Team in 2003. She was named MVP of the Canada Cup, helping Team USA to the tournament championship.
In addition to her playing credentials, Cox brings seven years of experience working clinics and camps. Most recently, she was a featured instructor at the Empire Sports Academy where she assisted in the development of youth programs. She has been a private softball instructor since 1999, and worked the Titan Softball clinics from 2000-03. She also was an instructor at the Just Softball clinics from 2000-02 and taught at the Julie Smith Lake Arrowhead clinic in 2000. Cox worked the Pam Newton softball clinics and seminars from 1996-2003.
Cox will graduate from Cal State Fullerton later this month with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. She was a member of the 2003 Titan Scholar Honor Roll. Cox replaces Christie McCoy who resigned to pursue other interests.
