FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Junior Tanya Rose and sophomore Cassie Morales were named to the Louisville Slugger All-Northeast Region First and Second Teams, respectively, by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Both players are now eligible for NFCA All-American honors.
Rose is the third Orange player to earn first-team all-region accolades in the last three seasons. She is SU’s first-ever two-time first-team all-region pick after earning the honor as a freshman in 2002. A second-team All-BIG EAST pick, Rose was one of three players to start a school-record 54 games. She hit .318 with eight home runs and 23 RBI from the leadoff spot. Rose set school records with 55 hits, 41 runs scored and 25 walks. She finished the season ranked second in the BIG EAST in runs scored, tied for 10th in total bases (90), fifth in walks and 8th in on-base percentage (.420). Rose is the first SU player ever to be named all-conference three times, and was also a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-District I selection. She was the BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 15 and March 22, becoming the first player in school history to receive the award twice in one season.
Morales earned all-region honors for the first time in her career. A member of the All-BIG EAST Third Team, she was one of three players to start a school-record 54 games. Morales hit .318 for the season, tying Rose for the SU school record with 55 hits. She established a new Orange single-season mark with 18 doubles, ranking first in the BIG EAST and tied for 13th nationally in that category. Morales hit six home runs and collected 36 RBI, while striking out just 16 times in 173 at-bats. She set a school record with 24 extra-base hits. Morales rated among the BIG EAST’s top 10 in runs batted in and total bases (91), while pacing the Orange with 16 multi-hit games, including five games with three hits.
The Orange has had six All-Northeast Region selections in the past three seasons. The All-American squads will be announced on Wednesday, May 26 at the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
