SYRACUSE, N.Y.
-- SU women’s lacrosse student-athletes Leigh-Ann Zimmer and Monica Joines have been named national All-Americans by the IWLCA/US Lacrosse. Zimmer was named to the first team, while Joines was picked to the third team.Zimmer became just the second Orange performer to be named to the first team (Stacey Brown, 2001). She was a second-team national honoree in 2002. Joines’ selection marked the second straight year she has picked to the third unit.
Zimmer led the Orange this season with 52 goals and 22 assists for a total 74 points. Her 52 goals and 74 points in 2004 are Syracuse single-season records. She also holds SU’s career records for goals (171) and career points (233). Last month, Zimmer was named the BIG EAST’s Co-Attack Player of the Year and first-team all-league after tying Meredith Simon for the conference lead in scoring. Zimmer became the first Orange women’s lacrosse player to be named first-team all-north region four times after being selected to the unit last week. She was also chosen as a second-team All-American by womenslacrosse.com.
Joines ranked second on the team this season with 40 goals and 48 points. She was also third on the squad with eight assists. Her 86 career goals place her sixth on Syracuse’s all-time goals list. Joines also joined Zimmer this season on the All-BIG EAST First Team and the All-North Region First Team.
