SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The five-member broadcast team for the Syracuse Sports Network features four SU alumns and a former Orange head coach for the 2004-05 season. Three new faces will be added to the lineup, including former Orange basketball player Gene Waldron, local sports anchor Kevin Maher and Brian Higgins.
Matt Park, a 1997 Syracuse graduate, will be the play-by-play voice for football and men’s basketball. He will be joined by football analyst Dick MacPherson, the SU mentor from 1981-90.
Maher, a 1997 graduate of SU’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, will handle pre-game, sideline and post-game duties on all Syracuse football broadcasts. Maher has been the sports director at WTVH-TV in Syracuse since August of 2000 where he has won several awards, including a New York State Broadcasting award for “Outstanding Sportscast.” Maher also serves as an adjunct professor at Newhouse.
Waldron will take over the men’s basketball analyst duties. A four-year letterwinner for the Orange from 1981-84, Waldron, played professionally in England from 1984-1999. He handled the analyst duties on the BBC radio broadcasts of the Leicester City Riders Basketball Club during the 2001-02 season. Waldron earned his bachelor’s degree in communications in 1984 and currently works with disadvantaged youth at the Elmcrest Children Center in Syracuse.
Higgins will perform a variety of duties, including play-by-play for men’s lacrosse. He will also be a feature reporter for SU football broadcasts. Higgins, a 2004 graduate of Syracuse’s Newhouse school, is familiar to Orange fans after serving as the play-by-play voice of the national championship lacrosse team last spring. Higgins has also done play-by-play for the Tri-City Valleycats, the New York Penn League affiliate of the Houston Astros, and WAER, one of Syracuse’s student stations.
“We are pleased to have such a talented group of broadcasters with strong Syracuse ties,” Syracuse Director of Athletics Jake Crouthamel said. “They will certainly provide our fans with enthusiasm and information on all of our broadcasts.”
All Syracuse football games can be heard live on the Syracuse Sports Network with WAQX-95.7 FM serving as the flagship. The football pre-game show will air two hours prior to kickoff. The first hour will air on ESPN Radio 1260 AM before network coverage begins at the start of the second hour. For home games, the first hour of the pre-game show will be held on the steps of the Carnegie Library on the SU quad.
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
