PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse center Vaida Sipaviciute has been named BIG EAST women's basketball co-Freshman of the Week for her performances in the Orange’s last two contests. It is the first honor for Sipaviciute and the second time that an SU rookie has won the award.
Sipaviciute averaged 19.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots in leading the Orange to a 1-1 week. In SU’s loss at West Virginia, she scored a then career-high 17 points, snared seven rebounds and blocked five shots. She followed that up with a 21-point, five-rebound, two-assist, two-block effort in the Orange’s victory versus Villanova. Sipaviciute hit the game-winning shot against the Wildcats with 1:13 left in the game.
Sipaviciute leads the BIG EAST this season with 50 blocked shots. She already ranks 10th on the Syracuse single-season list and ninth on the Orange’s career ledger. For the season, she is averaging 7.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Since the start of BIG EAST play, the 6-4 rookie from Kaunas, Lithuania is averaging 11.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 blocked shots per game. She also leads the team with a 51.9 field goal percentage in league games.
Syracuse is one of only two BIG EAST schools (Rutgers) to have two different players earn Freshman of the Week honors. Sara Antolick was the first weekly winner this season on Nov. 22.
The other recipient of the rookie award this week was Georgetown’s Kieraah Marlow. Marlow had two double-doubles and averaged 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds.
Sipaviciute and Marlow will square off on Wednesday, Feb. 2 when the Hoyas visit Manley Field House for the first of two meetings this season. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
