WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Syracuse finished play in the Deacon Classic hosted by Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday with senior Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) highlighting the weekend as she became the 24th member of the century club winning her 100th career match in the consolation final of the Flight C singles draw beating Melissa Kavanagh, 6-1, 6-3. Leong is the seventh player to go over the century mark in wins under head coach Mac Gifford.
The Orange got a pair of third place finishes over the weekend. Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) placed third in the Flight C singles, while SU’s number one doubles team Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadazki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took third in the Flight A doubles.
Vaynberg and Zawadzki were eliminated from the main draw by Virginia’s Wink/Del Priore but were able to regroup and come out and run away with the third place match against Tasheva/Boonzaaier of Tennessee Tech, 8-1. Zawadzki finished seventh in the Flight A singles by beating Emily Wade of UNC-Greensboro, 7-5, 7-5.
Huignard played her way to the semifinals of the Flight C singles before losing in three sets to Richmond’s Ashlee Vosters. Huignard won the third place match against Lara Alexander from Virginia, 6-4, 7-6.
