SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The Syracuse Orange and Georgetown Hoyas will square-off Thursday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament at the SU Soccer Stadium. The Orange comes in as the fourth seed from Division A, while Georgetown is the fifth seed from Division B.
Syracuse enters Thursday’s game after deciding its postseason fate in its final regular season game against South Florida on Sunday, a game that resulted in a 3-2 SU victory. Nikki Spartano (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored two goals to give the Orange a 2-0 lead, while Samantha Hawn (Spencerport, N.Y.) scored the first goal of her career to ice the SU victory.
Spartano and Molly McManus (Binghamton, N.Y.) lead the Orange in goals this season with three a piece. Lauren Jentzen (Marshfield, Mass) is second on the team with two goals. Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y.) leads the team in assists with four to go along with her one goal. Her assist total this season is tied for the fifth highest mark all-time posted by a freshman at SU.
Emily Kowalczyk (Dayton, Ohio) has led the Orange in goal this season with 69 saves and two shutouts. Ten times this season she has held her opponents to one goal or less.
Georgetown comes into Thursday’s game after falling to fifth in Division B after losing to Notre Dame, 6-1, to close out its regular season on Sunday. Alexandra Hardy (Lakewood, Calif.) scored the Hoyas lone goal off an assist from Sara Jordan (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Chrissy Skogen (San Marino, Calif.) leads the Hoyas in goals this season with 10. Hardy and Shara McNeill (Avon, Conn.) are tied for second on the team with two goals. Jordan leads the team with seven assists, while Hardy is second with five.
The two teams met previously this season at the SU Soccer Stadium with the Orange coming away with a thrilling, 1-0, double overtime victory. Spartano scored the game-winner in the 103rd minute. Both keepers played a key role in that game with Kowalczyk making five saves to earn the shutout, while her counterpart, Jade Higgins (Island Park, N.Y.) was also impressive making four saves.
The winner of Thursday’s game will travel to play Notre Dame on Sunday.
