Liz Cufari Garners All-BIG EAST Honors At Conference Championships

BRONX, N.Y., Oct. 28, 2005 - Sophomore Liz Cufari (21:45) placed 13th overall to pace the women's cross country team to a seventh place finish out of 16 teams at the 2005 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships held in Van Cortlandt Park. For her finish, Cufari garnered All-BIG EAST accolades. Sophomore Kyle Heath (25:32) was the top runner for the men, as they finished 10th out of 14 squads.
Notre Dame won both sides of the Championship. Georgetown and Providence rounded out the top three for the men, while Providence and Marquette finished second and third, respectively, in the women's field.
Cufari was followed by freshman Nana Sang-Bender (22:23) who finished 30th overall. Junior Katie Simon (23:22) came in 56th place. Rounding out the top five were sophomores Kathleen Sanborn (23:22) and Meghan Rowcliffe (24:00), who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Fiona Crombie of Providence won the women's championship with a time of 20:50.
On the men's side, Heath was followed by junior Matt Lawson (26:01) who placed 38th overall. Sophomore Matthew Gervasio (27:01) finished 63rd overall. Senior Timothy Scarpinato (27:41) and junior Joseph Ziminsky (27:44) rounded out the top five, finishing 76th and 77th, respectively.
A Friar won the men's event as well, as Martin Fagan was believed to break the course record with a time of 23:48. Notre Dame's Kurt Benninger also cracked the conference record at Van Cortlandt Park with a time of 24:09, but finished second overall.
SU is off until Nov. 12 when it will compete at the NCAA Regionals in Boston.
