SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Kelly Duan was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team in District 1, announced today. Duan is one of eight student-athletes from the BIG EAST to be named to an All-District team, and will now be added to the Academic All-America ballot.
District 1 is made up Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, and parts of Canada. Michaela Skelly was the last Orange student-athlete to earn the award, as she received it for her second-straight year in 2003.
Last season, Duan was an AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, the first student-athlete in program history to earn that accolade. She was also the first AVCA All-Region selection since 1989. This season, she has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll five times as she leads the team in kills (470), kills per game (4.31), and service aces (53).
Duan has been named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll four times and has been honored as a BIG EAST Academic All-Star twice. She is a double major in finance and accounting.
The Orange is on the road for its final weekend of regular season action in the BIG EAST. On Friday night, SU takes on Cincinnati at 7:30 p.m., and then it travels to No. 7 Louisville on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The weekend will be important in determining the final seedings for next weekends BIG EAST Championship, as the Bearcats are in fourth place behind the Orange, while the Cardinals are tied for first with Notre Dame.
