November 12 has been a busy day in the Carrier Dome during the past 25 years. The Dome has hosted three regular-season and two exhibition men’s basketball games, a football game and a Billy Joel concert on this date.
Last season the Orange men’s basketball team defeated Princeton, 56-45 to advance to the semifinals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Hakim Warrick scored 19 point, 10 rebounds, five assists and four blocks. Josh Pace, Darryl Watkins, Gerry McNamara and Demetris Nichols all reached double figures in scoring.
In 2001, Syracuse hosted Manhattan in the first round of the Preseason NIT. DeShaun Williams scored 22 points, while Preston Shumpert scored 21 to lead SU to a 78-58 victory.
The Orange also faced Princeton in its 1999 season-opener in the first round of the NABC Classic. Ryan Blackwell scored 18 points, had five rebounds, three steals and two assists, leading Syracuse to a 60-43 victory. Jason Hart added 14 points and five assists, and Damone Brown scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds.
Syracuse also faced Marathon in preseason exhibition games in 1990 and 1991.
The Orange football squad defeated Boston College, 21-10, in this date in 1983. Jaime Covington gained three of his team-high 84 yards rushing on a touchdown run in the second quarter that gave SU the lead for good. After the Eagles cut the lead to 14-10, Martin Chalk scored on a 28-yard pass from Todd Norley with 2:31 remaining in the game to secure the win. Norley finished the game 11-for-26 passing for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
In 1993, Billy Joel performed in the Carrier Dome in front of 37,292 fans.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
