By the time the 2005-06 men’s basketball season ends, senior Gerry McNamara will have placed his name on several of Syracuse’s career leader lists. In his freshman season, McNamara helped the Orange to the 2003 national championship. Perhaps his best all-around game of that regular season came on this date in SU’s 92-65 victory against Georgia Tech.
McNamara recorded his first career double-double in that game, scoring 25 points and dishing out 10 assists. The 25 points was his season-high that year. McNamara, SU’s all-time leader in three-point field goals, is one of 14 Syracuse players to score more than 1,600 career points. He has led the Orange in assists for the past three seasons and ranks sixth on the career leader list with 492. McNamara has a chance to become just the third player to lead SU in assists for four straight seasons.
Syracuse has played two other contests in the Dome on this date with the game coming in back-to-back seasons. In 1987, Matt Roe and Sherman Douglas combined for 46 points as the Orange beat Texas-San Antonio, 108-84. In 1988, Douglas and Stephen Thompson combined for 49 points in SU’s 94-71 win against Western Michigan.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
