The Syracuse men’s basketball team has played in the Carrier Dome nine times on December 22 during the past 25 years. The Orange has won eight of the nine contests.
In 1994, #6/7 Arizona visited the Loud House to take on #14/16 Syracuse. Leading 39-36, SU ended the half with a 10-0 scoring run to take a 49-36 halftime lead. The wildcats cut the lead to four in the first nine minutes of the second half and trailed 89-84 with 1:22 remaining on the clock. The Orange converted 5-of-6 free throw attempts in the final 42 seconds for a 94-84 victory in front of 24,446 fans. Lawrence Moten led SU with 25 points, six rebounds and seven assists. John Wallace recorded a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Lucious Jackson added 18 points. Damon Stoudamaire led Arizona with 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Last season, Syracuse defeated Rice, 88-72 on this date. The Orange led 39-34 at intermission and pulled away in the second half, hitting 19-of-28 shots from the field after the intermission. With SU holding a 44-39 advantage with 17:35 remaining in the second stanza, Syracuse used an 18-10 run during the next 6:16 to extend its advantage. Gerry McNamara had 19 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds while Josh Pace scored 22 points to lead SU.
Syracuse took on Central New York foe Colgate on this date in 2003. Five SU players reached double figures in scoring, led by Hakim Warrick’s 17 points, as the Orange recorded a 101-63 victory. The win extended Syracuse’s winning streak against the Raiders to 38.
Jason Hart scored 19 points and Ryan Blackwell had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the ninth-ranked Orange to a 68-52 win against LaSalle in 1999. In 1993, Syracuse defeated Miami, 81-52 to improve its BIG EAST record to 2-0.
Five Syracuse players scored in double figures in its 102-71 victory against LeMoyne in 1992. Dave Johnson scored 26 points to lead SU as the Orange also topped 100 points on this date in 1990, defeating Illinois-Chicago, 110-66. In 1984, Syracuse improved its record to 7-0 with a 84-63 win against Utica.
The Orange’s lone loss on this date in the Dome came in 2000. Tennessee defeated Syracuse, 83-70. DeShaun Williams led SU in scoring with 20 points. The loss was Syracuse’s first of the season.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
