The Syracuse men’s basketball team has played twice in the Carrier Dome during the past 25 years. The Orange has a perfect 2-0 record in those games.
Most recently, 22nd-ranked Syracuse defeated in-state foe St. Bonaventure, 71-55, in 1998. With SU leading by one, 18-17, with 5:33 remaining, Damone Brown sparked a 13-3 Syracuse scoring run that gave the Orange a 31-20 halftime advantage. Brown scored eight points during the run. The Bonnies cut SU’s lead to eight with 11:22 remaining in the game, but that was a close as they would get. Brown, one of four Orange to score in double figures, led SU with 21 points.
In 1982, Syracuse defeated Pittsburgh, 87-66. The Panthers scored the first six points points of the game, but Wendell Alexis’ basket at the 14:02 mark of the first half gave the Orange the lead for good. Erich Santifer led Syracuse with 20 points.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
