The Carrier Dome has been the site of six Syracuse men’s basketball games played on December 29 during the past 25 years. The six contests have been high-scoring affairs for the Orange as it averaged 96.5 points per contest, topping 100 points three times.
In 1980, the year the Dome opened, Syracuse had a season-high 43 field goals in a 100-84 victory against Colgate. It was the second time SU had surpassed the 100-point plateau that season.
The Orange had a more productive offensive effort two years later when it faced Canisius. SU shot 74 percent from the field in the first half on its way to a 109-76 victory. In 1990, Syracuse again scored more than 100 points, defeating Wagner, 101-55. Dave Johnson scored 26 points to lead SU.
SU defeated Colgate, 85-74, on this date in 1993. John Wallace led the way for the Orange with 24 points and eight rebounds. A year later, Syracuse defeated cross-town foe LeMoyne, 94-54. Michael Lloyd scored 16 points, while Wallace had 13 points and eight rebounds.
In 1999, Syracuse faced Hartford in the Dome. The Orange entered the game ranked No. 7/8 and unbeaten in eight games. Four Orange players reached double figures in scoring as SU won its ninth straight game, 90-69. Junior Damone Brown led Syracuse with 15 points, and Etan Thomas had 13 points and seven blocked shots.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
