Syracuse University Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross announced today that it will offer live video streaming of four home men’s basketball games and most of the women’s home basketball games as part of the department's All Access subscription service on www.suathletics.com. Audio for all games will be provided by the Syracuse ISP radio network. Other sports and select away games may be added to the package. To subscribe to the Orange All Access package click on the Orange All Access link on left side of this web page.
The streaming will begin on Saturday, December 10 with both the women’s basketball game against Massachusetts at 1:00 p.m. and the men’s game against Colgate at 7:00 p.m. Other men’s basketball games scheduled to be streamed include Davidson on Dec. 18, Illinois-Chicago on Dec. 21 and Texas El Paso on Jan. 4.
The University has conducted a number of video streaming tests on a limited basis with very favorable results. Fans from throughout the country, as well as foreign countries such as Iraq and China, watched the men’s basketball exhibition game against Lemoyne during one of the streaming tests. To view streaming video, computers must have a high speed internet connection and the latest version of Windows Media Player (a free download at www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia). Bandwidth constraints of service providers can affect the quality of the picture.
“The size and quality of the picture are not equal to television broadcasts at this point, but users have been quite happy with our tests,” said Jeff Rubin, president of Internet Consulting Services, the company that designed and maintains the technology SU’s official athletics website, suathletics.com.
The University launched its All Access service on suathletics.com in August to provide on demand video coverage of SU athletics. The service includes comprehensive video highlights, interviews, press conferences and behind the scenes features of all sports. All Access also includes live streaming audio of game broadcasts, as well as archived features and coaches shows. Cost of the All Access subscription service is $9.95 per month or $79.95 for a full year.
“We’re delighted to be able to offer this service to our fans all over the world,” Gross said. “Fans who do not reside in the Central New York area have never had access to this extensive coverage of the Orange. We’ve heard from many people who are absolutely thrilled with All Access.”
