NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Syracuse softball team (8-4) had its seven-game winning streak snapped with a pair of losses at Cal State Northridge (7-6) on Saturday, March 12. SU lost the first game, 1-0, and the second game, 2-1.
The Matadors’ Kia Fennell shut down the Orange offense in the opener, allowing only four hits and striking out 14. It was the first time this season that SU was shut out. Sophomore Courtney Mosch was the losing pitcher. Mosch (4-3) threw five and one-third innings, allowing one run on three hits. She struck out three and walked three. Freshman Erin Downey threw two-thirds of an inning in relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Junior Alexis Switenko led the SU offense in game one with two hits. Sophomore Erin Gray and freshman Chanel Roehner each had singles for the Orange. Senior Tanya Rose went hitless in the opener, snapping her nine-game hitting streak.
Cal State Northridge scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Emilee Moores came through with a two-out pinch-hit double off Downey to plate the winning run.
The Matadors’ Jen Moshier provided all the offense Northridge would need in the nightcap with two solo home runs. Her second long ball was the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh to snap a 1-1 tie.
Downey (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season, throwing six and one-third innings. She allowed six hits and struck out seven.
Senior Melissa Kelly paced the Orange offense in game two with two hits and a run batted in. Senior Jaime Grillo had two hits and Roehner added a single for SU.
The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Kelly singled in a run. Moshier’s first home run tied the game in the fourth. Neither team scored again until Moshier’s one-out homer in the home half of the seventh.
