Dragon and Joines Lead SU Against Massachusetts

AMHERST, MASS. – The #13 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team won its second-straight game with a 17-8 victory at Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The Orange improved to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST. The Orange was led by senior co-captains Caitlyn Dragon and Monica Joines. Dragon tied her personal-best six points with four goals and two assists, while Joines scored four goals and collected five ground balls. Massachusetts, coached by former Orange standout Carrie Bolduc, is now 0-3 against her alma mater.
The Minutewomen scored first in the contest off a Kathleen Typadis goal 4:31 into the game. The Orange answered right back as Dragon scored the first of her four goals at the 6:43 mark and junior Melody Agnew had the assist. Two freshman Allison Furstenburg goals gave the Orange a 3-1 advantage seven minutes into the game.
Ashleigh Szawlowski brought Massachusetts within one, 3-2, with her goal at 10:42, but SU answered back less than a minute later with Dragon goal off an Agnew setup to again take the two goal lead.
The Minutewomen scored off a Kerri Connerty free-position shot at 12:49 to keep the game within one goal. Three more SU goals, by junior Meghan O’Connell, Furstenburg and Dragon, and two Massachusetts goals by Samantha Sepulveda gave Syracuse a 7-5 advantage at the half.
The Orange came out in the second half on a 4-0 run during the first 6:43. O’Connell scored twice more and Agnew and Joines each had goals for Syracuse extending it to a six-goal lead, 11-5. Melynda Zwick scored Massachusetts’ first goal of the second half, ending the SU run, with a goal at the 39:10 mark in the game.
Syracuse continued its scoring run with three goals in less than two minutes by Dragon, senior Courtney Palladino and Joines, for a 14-6 advantage. The Minutewomen were unable to get any closer than seven goals the rest of the contest and the Orange won the decision 17-8.
Joines’ four goals ties her with Lauren Brady for fourth on the all-time list with 102 goals.
Furstenburg finished with a personal-best three goals, O’Connell’s three goals tied her career-best and Palladino’s two goals tied her career-high.
Zwick was the leading scorer for the Minutewomen with a hat-trick.
SU outshot Massachusetts 40-14 and led in groundballs 35-14. The Orange was also successful on all 15 clear attempts during the game.
The Orange returns to BIG EAST competition on Saturday, March 26, when Syracuse travels to Connecticut for a 1:00 p.m. game with the Huskies.
